Why do we have a scratchy throat and a stuffy nose after bathing in the Softub? -- F073

We have been using SpaBalancer in our Softub for several months now. So far we have been very satisfied. For some time now, my son and I have been getting a scratchy throat and a stuffy nose after a short time when using the Softub. In addition, a dry coughing, which greatly diminishes the fun of bathing. My wife, however, does not mind the smell or steam. Can you give me an indication of what we can optimise in terms of water care? Is it the SpaBalancer or the UltraShock?

The pool is about three years old. We bought it used in July. Before filling it at the beginning of August, we completely cleaned the inside walls with "Liner Cleaner" recommended by Softup. Since we filled it, we have only used SpaBalancer and UltraShock. I add approx. 60-70 ml SpaBalancer once a week and after each bath approx. 20-30 ml UltraShock. Since the end of August, I have been putting the filters into filter cleaner for one night every 14 days, alternating between the two. Can it possibly come from this?

Answer:
It is not the filter cleaner. The cause will rather be chloramines, which are found in deposits in the pipelines. By using UltraShock, these deposits are dissolved and the chloramines are released. Chloramines can irritate the airways, and some people are more sensitive than others.

In your case, we recommend reducing the dosage of SpaBalancer Basic to 20 ml per week. In return, you should increase the addition of Ultrashock very considerably. Add 50 ml Ultrashock to the water daily and measure the UltraShock content with the test strips. This should be between 1.0 and 2.0 mg/litre. Please adjust the amount added accordingly.

The large amount of UltraShock will dissolve the deposits and oxidise the chloramine. However, this process can take up to six weeks, so you should not expect results too quickly. It is helpful to keep the pH of the water between 6.5 and 6.8 during this time.
